Descriptions of classes:

Acting I and II – ‘Acting is doing.’ In this class we explore the concept of truthful doing on stage. We begin developing the actor’s instrument, sensitizing the actor to the needs of the stage, increasing capacity for observation, attention, expression, and experience in the present moment. Emphasis will be placed on decentralizing and decolonizing ourselves from using exclusively Eurocentric practices. We practice via physical and vocal warm-ups, playful imaginings, open scenes, reading and seeing plays, and acting exercises developed by a variety of masters, including Dr. Sharrell D. Luckett, Augusto Boal, Freddie Hendricks, and others. We learn about actioning, objectives and obstacles and engage them in our scene work.

Intermediate Acting-Scene Study / Graduate Scene Study – ‘Acting is living truthfully under imaginary circumstances.’ We continue to develop all of the values and skills we embraced in Acting 1. We go further into character development, psychophysical techniques, as-ifs, particularizations, moment to moment work, tactics, stakes and play analysis. We work on a monologue and two scenes and continue to explore warm-ups and rituals that serve our individual creative goals, deepening our personal practices. We are supported by Dr. Luckett’s text Black Acting Methods, Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed, and selections from various others.

Director’s Studio - Directing students will be confronted with real-world scenarios that can and do face professional directors in the industry, as broken into two units of study: engaging students in a discussion and theory-into-practice exploration of directorial style and approach – and – the examination of how we as directors fear, address, digest, and process our failures in a healthy way. We will also use this time to raise and discuss personal professional experiences, ask the hard questions, and share with each other the issues that may (past, present and future) be facing each of us in our own process as directors in these areas of study. As always, this course is a celebration of our jobs as consummate observers of the human condition, conflict, relationships, and how we best tell stories; being present to, and examining those experiences in our world that continue to make us better artists.

Warm Fuzzies Playwriting Workshop - This course introduces students to foundational principles of playwriting through identifying individual artist strengths during class discussion and writing exercises. The course is structured as a workshop, the primary focus of which is the development, writing and revision of short-form dramatic works. In the past, many of these works have gone on to further development and eventual production.
